The complex endorsement under FAR 61.31(e) is required before acting as pilot in command of an airplane with retractable landing gear, a controllable-pitch propeller, and flaps. The endorsement is a one-time signoff after ground and flight training in a complex airplane.
The complex endorsement is also a Commercial Pilot Certificate requirement: 10 hours of dual in a complex airplane is part of the Commercial training profile. Many career students earn the endorsement during Commercial training without an additional dedicated block.

What the complex endorsement covers
Operations and procedures specific to retractable gear (extension, retraction, emergency procedures, downlock verification), constant-speed propeller management (RPM and manifold pressure relationships, prop control during transitions), and flap usage in higher-performance airplanes. [expand]
Training in the Piper Arrow
The Piper Cherokee Arrow at Riverside is the training airplane. Most students complete the endorsement in 3 to 5 flight hours plus 2 to 4 hours of ground. [expand]
Combined with Commercial
The complex endorsement is most cost-effective when combined with Commercial training, since the 10 hours of complex dual required for Commercial naturally covers everything the endorsement needs. [expand]
Standalone training
If you are not pursuing a Commercial and just need the endorsement to fly a friend's Cessna 210 or a club Arrow, a 2 to 3 flight block at Riverside completes the requirement. [expand]
