The high performance endorsement under FAR 61.31(f) is required before acting as pilot in command of an airplane with an engine producing more than 200 horsepower. The endorsement is a one-time signoff issued by an authorized instructor after ground and flight training.
Many career pilots add the high performance endorsement alongside the complex endorsement during Commercial training, since the Piper Cherokee Arrow used for complex training also satisfies the high-performance threshold for many configurations.

What FAR 61.31(f) covers
Pilots holding only a Private or higher certificate but no high-performance endorsement cannot fly Pilatus, Cirrus SR22, Cessna 210, Cessna 182 (in some configurations), or other 200+ HP aircraft as pilot in command. [expand]
Training in the Piper Arrow
The Cherokee Arrow at Riverside is a 200 HP airplane that also has retractable gear and constant-speed prop, which means many students obtain the high performance and complex endorsements together. [expand]
Ground topics
Engine management at high power settings, leaning procedures, fuel and oil systems, performance charts and weight-and-balance for the higher-power airplane. [expand]
Flight training
Normal and crosswind takeoffs and landings in the high-performance airplane, climb-out at higher power settings, descent and approach with power management, simulated engine emergencies. [expand]
